Beloit Urban Garden (BUG)
Description
Beloit Urban Garden’s mission is to educate Beloit College students about growing food using organic methods, to build hands-on connections with the curriculum, and to nourish campus by providing produce to students.
Beloit Urban Garden envisions a campus where all students have the opportunity to take ownership of their food sources, and feel empowered to use that knowledge to contribute to the resilience and health of current and future communities.
Details
BUG is a space that offers opportunities for experiential learning and research. It is student-run and managed, and produces sustainable and ecologically-sound food connections to the Beloit College campus. BUG works to be a space that enhances the college’s reputation for alumni, prospective students and community members. It maximizes Wisconsin’s growing season, and is aesthetically pleasing to humans and important pollinators. BUG also provides a space for students and student groups to come together and learn about gardening/the environment.
BUG believes that all people have the right to know where their food is coming from. Gardens allow people to take ownership of the learning process by being active in research, management and discovery outside of the classroom. Knowledge is produced by farmers, neighbors, faculty and students, and there is value in a multiplicity of views. Growing and establishing community through collective work is vital to the health of campus culture.
Beloit Urban Garden acknowledges and encourages the uniqueness of each individual. Membership to BUG is open to any Beloit College student and does not discriminate on the basis of sex, race, color, religion, national origin, language, ancestry, age, sexual orientation, gender identity, veteran status, or physical or mental disabilities. Anyone who regularly attends three BUG meetings or participates in the planning or running of a BUG sponsored event is considered a core member of BUG. Voting rights are reserved to members.
